Which areas of Southampton are most popular with students?
Portswood and Highfield are by far the most sought-after areas in Southampton amongst students. Both of these neighbourhoods are just a stone’s throw away from the University of Southampton (in fact, Highfield is actually home to Soton’s main campus itself!), making them the most ideal places for Southampton student accommodation. They both have their own unique qualities too, with nearby Portswood Road providing both areas with an array of easily-accessible cafés, restaurants and pubs — everything a student needs, really!
The Polygon is also highly popular with students. Just to the north of the City Centre, the Polygon has export transport links and is only a hop, skip and a jump from Southampton Solent University, making it perfect for student housing near Southampton Solent. Living in Polygon also means you’re only ever a short distance away from a wide variety of restaurants and bars, so you’ll always have something to do in an evening.
Southampton's City Centre is perfect for those who love the hustle and bustle of busy city living. The area is packed full of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants, and there's plenty of opportunity to go out partying. At night, the high street well and truly comes alive!
Two other well-known areas for student homes in Southampton are Bassett and Shirley. Both are great locations for medical students studying at the Southampton General Hospital, or for those taking advantage of one of the many sporting facilities that form part of the University of Southampton.
Which house sizes are most in demand with students from Southampton?
It’s the 4-bed properties that are most popular amongst students, followed by 5-beds and then 6-. What can we say? Southampton is a social city.
That being said, you’re in for a treat if you’re after something palatial like a 7-, 8- or even 9-bed mini mansion for you and your mates, as these are the least sought-after in the Southampton scene.
Student life in Southampton
If you’re looking for a career at sea, then Southampton is the place to study. Both the University of Southampton and Solent University embrace the city’s seafaring heritage, with degrees designed to support a career in the marine and maritime industry. What’s more, as a student in Southampton you’ll find a whole load of maritime museums and events to explore; the RMS Titanic actually departed from Southampton, which you can learn more about in the SeaCity Museum.
Southampton is also the proud home of the Skandia Cowes, the world’s biggest sailing regatta that takes place every year between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.
Not a big water person? Don’t worry, you don’t have to go in. In fact, despite being by the sea, Southampton doesn’t actually have its own beach. Yet, with other popular seaside towns like Bournemouth, Brighton and Portsmouth only a short train ride away, you have loads of choice when it comes to picking the perfect spot for sunbathing.
If you really want to get to grips with student life in the city, then the Orange Rooms and Sobar have to be your first stop. Both clubs are firm faves with students, and both regularly host all kinds of fancy-dress parties and themed nights out.
For those who prefer watching a show over gracing the dancefloor, the Cultural Quarter is where you’ll find all the top places for a night of entertainment. The Mayflower Theatre and the O2 Guildhall are both based here, along with a variety of bars and chain restaurants which line the outskirts of the quarter, giving you plenty to get stuck into.
There’s also plenty of shops with high street brands dotted around the city if you’re looking for a bit of retail therapy in between lectures.
Did you know?
Going for a night out in Southampton? You’re in good hands, as Southampton has consistently been declared a ‘Purple Flag’ city over the last three years for its exciting and safe nightlife — officially making it one of the best places in the country to let your hair down and have fun.
