It’s easy to filter by number of bedrooms, area and price, so you can quickly find the ideal place to call your own.
We’ve been working with Sheffield students since our business first opened its doors in 2015, so it’s safe to say that here at UniHomes we know Sheffield better than anyone. It certainly doesn’t hurt that our founders went to university here, too – it was the founders’ very own experiences with finding student lets in Sheffield that encouraged them to start UniHomes in the first place, all with the aim of paring down the house-hunting experience and ensuring that students no longer have to face the same challenges that Phil, Luca and Brad (the brains behind UniHomes) once did. Sheffield really has been at the core of our business since well before day one, so whether you’re looking for a house or a flat, city lights or more-rural retreats, you’ll be able to search it, secure it and sort it right here with the large selection of Sheffield student houses featured on our website.
Sheffield student housing market: everything you need to know
How much does student accommodation in Sheffield cost?
The average price for student houses and student apartments in Sheffield is £127 per person a week. The selection of Sheffield student apartments and homes that we showcase ranges from £94 to £329, meaning whatever budget you’re working with, you can find the right place for you. All bills are included when you rent through us so you can know exactly how much you’ll be paying before you even pick up the keys.
When does the Sheffield student property season run from and to?
Sheffield students usually start their property search in early October, with demand hitting its peak come November. The sooner you start looking, the more likely you are to find what you need, whether that’s housing near Sheffield Hallam University or University of Sheffield accommodation. By May, most students in Sheffield are all moved in. The market here moves fast, so the sooner you start property hunting the better.
Which areas of Sheffield are most popular with students?
Crookesmoor is definitely the most popular haunt for Sheffield student houses, with over twice as much demand for properties here as the next most sought-after areas. With an easy walk into University of Sheffield’s campus and the City Centre, great bus routes across the city, and parks like Crookes Valley Park, Weston Park and the Ponderosa on your doorstep, it’s easy to see why Crookesmoor takes the crown.
But Sheffield has much more to offer if you’re willing to explore. The Ecclesall Road area (home to the Sheffield Hallam Collegiate Campus) and close-by Sharrow are full of indie shops, restaurants and bars, and will never see you short of a plan for a night out with friends thanks to popular pubs like The Nursery Tavern and The Sheaf Island Wetherspoons. The Botanical Gardens and Endcliffe Park are handily only a stone’s throw away too, giving you the most picturesque backdrops for walking off any hangovers and refreshing your senses before lectures.
Broomhill is also a great shout for student houses in Sheffield, with plenty of nearby pubs and a very doable walk to the UoS campus. Its amazing selection of charity shops, restaurants and cafés make it undeniably one of the most student-friendly areas in Sheffield.
You can also give the City Centre a go, where you’ll find an active nightlife and loads of choices for food from across the globe. West Street is definitely the go-to place for bars and clubs such as Tiger Works, Popworld and Mr Wilson’s, whereas the Devonshire Quarter around the corner is best for more laid-back eateries and pubs as well as a whole plethora of independent shops. If live music is what you’re after, check out Corporation (for heavy music from up-and-coming bands) or The Leadmill, a historic venue that has played host to class acts like The Killers, George Ezra, Courteeners and, of course, Sheffield’s very own bands Pulp and Arctic Monkeys. Imagine living round the corner from all this – you’d never actually be in.
Which house sizes are most in demand with Sheffield students?
In 2023-24, we noticed 4-bed properties were flying off the shelves, while 5- and 6-beds weren’t far behind. It’s a competitive market in Sheffield, so make sure you start looking early to avoid missing out. Also have a think about who you really, really want to live with – there’s a lot less demand for 1-bedroom student flats in Sheffield, while at the other end of the scale homes with 9+ bedrooms are there for the taking too. Party round yours?
Student life in Sheffield
For centuries Sheffield (or rather, the Steel City) has been at the forefront of innovation and industry, giving us stainless steel and world-dominating music from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Bring Me the Horizon. It's no wonder Sheffielders are so proud of their city, something made palpable by the hundreds of conservation efforts over the years that have made it so that Sheffield's cultural heritage hasn’t been left by the wayside. From the restorations of ex-factories like the Cutlery Works, to the upkeep of medieval monoliths like the Cathedral in the heart of the city, Sheffield has been lovingly tended to over years by the very people that are proud to call the city a home.
So, whether you're out at bars like Factory Floor and Church - Temple of Fun (owned by Bring Me the Horizon frontman Oli Sykes) in the industrial Kelham Island or hanging around the Antiques Quarter and the nearby 1920s Picture House on Abbeydale Road, you're guaranteed to always be surrounded by masses and masses of history and an immense sense of community.
Preservation efforts don’t just stop at buildings, though – Sheffield holds the title of ‘The UK’s greenest city’, thanks to the 250+ public parks that are sprawled around the city. With acres and acres of green land, it’s hardly surprising that there are more trees per person here than in any other city in Europe.
Love the appeal of endless greenery? The Peak District is just a short bus or train ride away, offering gorgeous walks and spectacular views in places like Padley Gorge and Bamford Edge. If you’re more of a thrill seeker than a hiker, the Peaks offer caving in Castleton and abseiling at Millers Dale Bridge. It’s also definitely worth going for an explore to discover villages like Bakewell, Ashford in the Water, and Eyam - the village with a tragic and occasionally spooky plague history.

Did you know?
Sheffield has its very own condiment, making it almost illegal to have anything else on your full English in the city. Henderson’s Relish, or Hendo’s once you’ve lived here for a while, goes great with pretty much anything, and the original factory is being restored by the Uni of Sheffield with rumours that it could be turned into a pub. And before you ask - of course someone has made a Hendo’s beer. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if that’s a terrible step too far.

There was no worry about transferring money, and it was a fixed cost every month which really helped with budgeting!"
