Uni Life in Sheffield

This city is often described as "England's biggest village" - and once you immerse yourself in Sheffield student life, it's easy to see why. The city centre is teeming with life but remains refreshingly compact - you can walk from one end to the other in under ten minutes, passing through buzzing cafés, music venues, and cultural hotspots along the way. It’s a city that’s easy to get around and even easier to feel at home in!
If you step outside of the city centre, you'll find a mix of suburban neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character. Areas like Ecclesall Road, Sharrow, and Crookesmoor feature a wealth of student homes, ranging from three-bedroom terraced houses to larger houses with 10+ bedrooms to rent. Social and packed with local amenities, these hubs are famed for Sheffield student living. As one of the UK's most student-friendly cities, landing your perfect student spot is all part of the fun.

Key reasons to study in Sheffield

    That 'local' feel

When living in Sheffield as a student, you’ll find that most of its city amenities are concentrated in a single square mile. This makes it incredibly easy to walk across, but you've also got a comprehensive, regular bus service for the occasional longer journey. The clustered city nucleus also makes it very easy to make friends. Students often praise Sheffield's strong feeling of community and relaxed atmosphere compared to other UK cities. Sheffield is also known for its high retention rate; it has a large proportion of students returning after graduating to live and work in the city full-time.

    Plenty of free activities

Sheffield student life wouldn’t be complete without a freebie! If you don’t plan on breaking the bank, this area has got you covered with plenty of free things to get stuck into. Whilst often named the Steel City, Sheffield is also said to be England’s greenest city, with spots like the Botanical Gardens, the Peak District, and Ecclesall Woods making for great days out. Putting nature aside, you can also enjoy a free dive into history at the Kelham Island Museum, Millennium Gallery, and Sheffield Cathedral.

    A student-oriented city

With a student population of over 60,000, Sheffield is undeniably one of the country's most student-oriented cities. It has a wide range of student accommodation, from purpose-built to privately let flats and houses. Multiple city districts are considered student areas (such as Highfield, Eccleshall Road, Broomhill, and Crookes). Many shops, bars, and services offer student discounts, so remember to take your student ID out with you to your favourite study spot, and don't be afraid to ask!

    Cheap eats

There are plenty of fantastic (and Instagrammable) places to eat in Sheffield. After all, Cambridge Street Collective is Europe’s largest purpose-built food hall, so there really is something for everyone here. Vegetarians and vegans will love 5Tara, which specialises in traditional Punjabi cuisine, while gamers should have their eye on Sheffield’s first boardgame café, The Treehouse. Here, you and your flatmates can get stuck into more than 800 games! But the fun and games continue - you can grab anything from barista-style coffee and locally-sourced food in the daytime to craft beer at night.

    Good transport links

Sheffield has a network of buses, and the north and east sides of the city also have frequent trams running through them, making it easy to get around - and get to your lectures on time. Cycling and walking are also encouraged, perfect if you’re aiming to save money and get fit. If you want to explore further afield, rest assured that Sheffield’s train station is very well-connected: you can get to Manchester in around one hour and London in around two hours!

Sheffield is a fantastic city full of culture and friendly people, brimming full of amazing coffee shops, independent shops and the BEST night-life. West Street is the best for a bar crawl and night out! It's such a green city full of parks and museums!

Student Life in Sheffield

I feel like Sheffield is a place where you can fully be yourself. I think it's a place of self expression. Also Sheffield is a very friendly city - maybe it's the Yorkshire people but there are a lot of lovely people that aren't uni students I have met. The nightlife is brilliant!
