About the author: Hi! I'm Isabelle, a BA Journalism student at Coventry University. I run the socials for CU Phoenix Radio, the university's student radio station. Outside of uni, I'm an avid sourdough baker, Swiftie, and animal lover (especially when it comes to my pets!).

Looking to try something new on a night out? Or want to get the most out of student nights and discounts at the best pubs in Coventry city centre? Look no further than this Coventry bar crawl!

With a route that surrounds the Coventry University campus and hits all the best student-friendly bars and pubs, it’s a surefire way to make the most of a night out.

My route for a bar crawl in Coventry

So, where to start?

Start here: The Flying Standard (Wetherspoons)

This mock-Tudor style building just off The Burges hosts a massive Wetherspoons pub. With cheap drinks and food, lots of space, and just a short walk from the middle of the city centre, this pub is a great place to start a bar crawl in Coventry. Whether you’re looking for a stop for pre-drinks or a starting point to meet friends, The Flying Standard is easy to access from anywhere in the city.

Deals/discounts? Wetherspoons doesn’t have a student discount, but it’s a reliably cheap pub. Deals include three shots for £6.50, Tuesday Club offer of a beer and a burger from £9.99, and cheap cocktails - perfect for students on a budget.

Next stop: Boom Battle Bar

Just steps away from the Flying Standard is Boom Battle Bar. This is the perfect stop to kill a few hours and have a great time. With shuffleboard, beer pong, and augmented reality darts, there are so many activities to do while you grab a drink. Not interested in physical activities? Worry not, Boom Battle Bar also has karaoke booths, so you and your friends can sing your hearts out before heading to the next stop.

Deals/discounts? Boom Battle Bar has a 25% student discount Sunday to Thursday. Two-for-one cocktail offers are 4 PM to 7 PM Monday to Thursday.

Next stop: The Earl of Mercia (Wetherspoons)

Named after the husband of Lady Godiva, The Earl of Mercia is the perfect place for a mid-bar-crawl pit stop. Refuel here with cheap food and drinks before setting off. Still in the heart of the city centre and minutes from the Coventry University Campus, this pub is a great midpoint for a Coventry bar crawl.

Deals/discounts? Same as The Flying Standard, deals are limited, but drinks are reliably cheaper than most pubs and bars in Coventry throughout the week.

Next stop: The Castle Grounds

Next door to The Earl of Mercia, The Castle Grounds is one of the most student-friendly bars in the city. With many societies hosting socials and events here, there’s always something fun going on inside. Whether you want to have a drink and watch the latest Coventry City match (or World Cup showing), or enjoy live music and DJ performances, this bar has it all. As the evenings get lighter and hotter into the summer, The Castle Grounds has outdoor balcony seating, so you can soak up the sun with a drink in hand.

Deals/discounts? The Castle Grounds hosts student nights every Wednesday from 6 PM with cheaper drinks and events, as well as a 20% student discount with a valid student ID all week.

End here: The Phoenix

As the name suggests, The Phoenix is the main student bar for Coventry University students. Next to the Ellen Terry building and directly across from The Hub, this pub-bar hybrid is easy to access from most Coventry student accommodation. The Phoenix frequently hosts live music gigs and shows the latest sporting events, but a student favourite is Thursday night boozy bingo.

Deals/discounts? The Phoenix has events all through the week, but the cheapest night is usually a Thursday, with £4.25 cocktails and £8 pitchers. Deals and offers for The Phoenix can also be accessed through the MiXR app.

So, when should I go to make the most out of these deals?

If you just want to make the most of student deals and offers, a Wednesday or Thursday is your best bet, with the more expensive bars and pubs hosting their student offers across these days. But if you’re interested in the events and gigs, Thursday is the absolute go-to, with boozy bingo and live music across the city.
